    The creation of the original Freightliner Century Class required the largest design effort in the history of Freightliner. This massive project, which began in the early 1990's, included a three-year design and development period where everything was closely examined down to individual nuts and bolts.

The concept behind the original Century Class centered on creating an entirely new family of heavy-duty trucks. Existing products were not even considered as competitors when evaluating new Century Class ideas. They were only used as examples of current state-of-the-art and as a benchmark when Freightliner assessed new technology to push every facet of the vehicle forward.
 

    Months of extensive interviews with divergent customers across North America helped set direction and focus for this effort, resulting in the introduction of the original Freightliner Century Class in 1995.
 
    The result? The Freightliner Century Class was well accepted by customers, especially a whole new market of technology-conscious and efficiency-minded truck buyers. They appreciated the comfort and operational efficiency of the Century Class. From all standpoints, the introduction of the Century Class was a success.
